It’s almost move-in day! Find specific directions to each residence hall on our move-in website.
Keep reading, or watch our What to Expect on Move-in Day video, to help the Hokies in your life prepare for their first day living at Virginia Tech!
Where should students park on move-in day?
What happens after a student finds their short-term parking lot?
- Locate your student’s check-in location using our move-in maps for each residence hall. It is most likely in the residence hall’s lobby or a tent outside. This is where you can get a moving cart if you need it. Students must check in at a tent to gain access to their room!
- Unload the car.
- Go to the residence hall to move into your Hokie’s new home! Watch this video to learn how to use a Hokie Passport and 4-digit PIN to open the door.
- Keep an eye on the time and make sure your student moves their car to long-term parking by the end of their time slot!
- Return any moving cart you or your student borrowed from our helpers to where you found it so it can be used by the next student moving in.
What if a student arrives early or late?
We encourage students to arrive as close to their designated time slot as possible to ensure Hokies checking in before and after them have access to their spaces. Arriving on time reduces lines, wait times, and traffic on campus during move-in!
✅ If a student is early, their Hokie Passport will not work to access their room. It activates at their designated time. If they are early, they should wait for their time in the Cage Lot.
✅ Running late? Focus on getting here safely! Anyone arriving after 5:45 p.m. can check in at the Housing Services Front Desk located in the lobby of New Hall West at 190 West Campus Drive, Blacksburg, VA 24061.
A Few More Tips for Move-in Day
- Prepare for a lot of walking and climbing stairs.
- Be prepared for summer weather, and bring some water. Some water will be available at check-in stations.
- Plan to send home or dispose of packing boxes, crates, or other moving supplies. Students probably won’t have room for them in their residence hall. We provide several cardboard recycling stations near the dumpsters around each residence hall.
My Hokie is Moved In! What’s Next?
Welcome your Hokie to their new home! Students will have a mandatory community orientation with their Student Leaders at 6:30 p.m. on their first night!
Remind your student to complete their Room Inspection and Roommate Agreement using the StarRez Portal.
Encourage Hokies you know to download the MobileID App! If they leave their Hokie Passport in their room and get locked out, this app will allow them to open their room door with their phone.
We can’t wait to see you on campus and wish you safe travels!
